If you want to own a BMW 5-Series Touring but aren’t willing to sell your house (or a kidney) to purchase a new one (not that you could in the States, anyway since BMW doesn’t offer them), this 2001 540i Touring currently available on Bring A Trailer could be the perfect car for you.
While this E39-generation 5-Series may be the better part of two decades old, it still looks quite nice, particularly thanks to the Orient Blue Metallic paint scheme and 17-inch silver wheels that provide it with a retro and timeless design. It is being sold with a clean Carfax report and a clean New Jersey title. At the time of writing, the car had attracted a highest bid of $10,000 with 6 days left in the auction.

Inside, the 5-Series is starting to show its age a little more than from the outside but even still, it looks like a nice place to sit in, thanks particularly to the Sand Beige leather interior that comes complete with matching door panels and carpeting. There are also wooden accents across the dashboard, door panels, and center console, as well as power-adjustable and heated front seats complete with memory functions. A look at the odometer reveals the car has only ever been driven 35,000 miles (roughly 56,000 km).
Then we come to the powertrain. Driving the 2001 540i is a naturally-aspirated 4.4-liter V8 engine with no less than 282 hp at 5,400 rpm and 324 lb-ft (439 Nm) of torque at 3,600 rpm. This power is sent through the rear wheels courtesy of a five-speed automatic transmission, which is the only thing we’re not crazy about, but you can’t have it all, can you.
