Toyota has announced a new global one make racing series called the GR Supra GT Cup 2020.
However, there’s an important caveat – the series largely takes place on Gran Turismo Sport for PlayStation 4.
According to Toyota Gazoo Racing, they’re holding the series to embrace the “e-motorsports” community and “make motorsports and sport cars more accessible and enjoyable across generations … around the world.”

The series will kick off on April 26th at the digital version of Japan’s Fuji International Speedway. From there, the series will visit the Nürburgring (May 17th), Circuit de La Sarthe (June 7th) and Laguna Seca (June 21st). There will also be virtual stops at Autódromo José Carlos Pace (July 5th), Tokyo Expressway: South Inner loop (July 19th) and Mount Panorama (August 16th).
The first seven events are qualifying rounds and it appears the fastest drivers will then be invited to take part in a real race this November. However, details are still “to be determined.”
In order to participate, gamers need to own a PS4 and Gran Turismo Sport. They’ll also need to own a GR Supra in the game and be at least six years old.
Fans can read more about the series here and find start times for the various events. The latter is important as the GR Supra GT Cup is a global event and start times vary by location.
Toyota says approximately 800,000 Gran Turismo players own the GR Supra and they have “received feedback and evaluation from the top drivers and also questionnaires from over 120,000 Gran Turismo drivers which we will use to enhance actual GR Supra development.”
