Our spy photographers caught the new 2021 Mercedes-Benz Citan on camera again. We’ve added new pictures in the gallery. [Update 03/13/2020]

Last year, Mercedes-Benz gave the green light to a new generation Citan, and now we have the first spy shots of the small van taken during cold weather testing in Scandinavia.

You don’t have to be a connoisseur to tell that it’s still a rebadged version of the Renault Kangoo. It sports similar overall proportions, with the only areas setting them apart being the redesigned front and rear ends.

Expected to be based on the CMF-C platform, which is also used by the latest Megane, it should improve the cargo volume in the panel van configuration, while the passenger version should offer improved space for rear occupants.

Speaking of the cabin, we understand it will get new technology gear, including a modern infotainment system, as well as several safety assist systems. Customers should expect better build quality and fine materials in higher-end models.

Transitioning to the new architecture will allow the new Citan to pack electrified power. The 2021 Kangoo is expected to gain a hybrid propulsion system, with a battery-electric variant that should join the lineup in 2021. Mercedes-Benz has already confirmed a zero-emission model, which will launch alongside the ICE-powered derivatives and will sit next to the electrified Vito, Sprinter and V-Class.

The official unveiling date of the light commercial vehicle is unknown, but it will probably debut before the end of the 2020 or early next year. Production will take place on the same assembly line as the outgoing iteration. That’s Renault’s Maubeuge Construction Automobile plant in France, where the new Kangoo will be manufactured as well.
