In 2017, Bugatti set a 0-400-0 km/h (0-249-0 mph) record with the Chiron of just 41.96 seconds and to promote the record-breaking feat, published an epic video that showed the hypercar sprinting off the line, seemingly filmed by a chase car that was keeping pace.

Shortly after footage of the Bugatti Chiron’s run hit the web, the French marque confirmed that the unique camera angle was indeed captured by another Chiron that was accelerating down the straight at Ehra-Lessien just a few feet in front of the car driven by Juan Pablo Montoya. Fast forward to 2020 and the man who helped film the run has gone behind the scenes to show just what it took to deliver that epic angle.

Camera crews rigged up a small drone camera to the back of the lead Bugatti Chiron, painted white, and were tasked with launching the car off the line at exactly the same rate as the black Chiron that went on to set the record. The resulting footage was so smooth that editors had to add some camera shake into the final video to give it some added life.

Not everything went perfectly, however. If you watch the original video closely, you’ll notice that the black Chiron isn’t perfectly in focus. That’s because the custom rig at the back of the white Chiron film car meant the camera was filming through the exhaust gases of the hypercar as it built up speed, making things look a little out of focus.

Nevertheless, this piece of footage remains iconic in the story of the Chiron and has been viewed over 100 million times on social media.
