What If VW Gave The Scirocco A 2021 Golf Mk8-Inspired Makeover?

Some thought of it as a small coupe, others as a sports three-door hatchback, but no matter what you called it when it was still available in Europe and other markets outside America it, the Volkswagen Scirocco had a loyal following.

The German automaker held on to the series from 2008 through 2017, when production ended with no successor in sight, and for the final two years of assembly, it was offered in the hotter GTS spec. This version used the same drivetrain as the Golf GTI Mk7, namely the 2.0-liter turbo-four, rated at 220 PS (217 HP / 162 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque.

Now, with the new eighth generation Golf out, KleberSilva thought it might be a good time to resurrect the Scirocco in the digital realm. The entire front end, including the bumper, grille, headlights, bonnet and fenders carry over from the Mk8 Golf GTI, while further back, the doors and rear quarter panels get new lines. The rear bumper is also inspired by the new GTI, while the diffuser continues to house the double tailpipes on the left side. The taillights soldier on with only minor revisions, the ‘GTS’ badge was moved in the middle of the tailgate, under the ‘VW’ logo, and the wheels are identical to the 2021 Golf GTI.

In order for the build to be complete, it would need the 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine powering the 2021 Golf GTI. It’s connected to a six-speed manual gearbox as standard or an optional seven-speed DSG and front-wheel drive, and delivers 245 PS (242 HP / 180 kW) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft) of torque.

Since we’re daydreaming, the interior design would probably be carried over as well, although with small adjustments and perhaps trim updates, as well as the latest technology gear found in the new Golf.

While it may be doable, it’s not feasible, as sales of three-door hatchbacks have hit an all-time low, and Volkswagen, like other auto firms, won’t build such cars anymore. Even the Golf Mk8 will only be offered as a five-door hatchback and estate, so no one should hold their breath for a new Scirocco.
