If we were to tell you that you could buy a Maserati Coupe with a Ferrari-sourced V8 (and if you’re patient enough, with a sweet manual gearbox too) for less than $20,000, would you believe us? The answer is you can and there’s actually quite a few to choose from.

Doug DeMuro recently had the opportunity to test out a Maserati Coupe on his YouTube channel and revealed that the particular example he was driving had an asking price of under $20,000. That got us thinking and we started to search eBay and Auto Trader for similarly cheap models. We found many.

The Maserati Coupe was built and sold by the Italian car manufacturer from 2001 to 2007. Each unit came outfitted with the F136-codenamed 4.2-liter naturally-aspirated V8 that was commonly known as the Ferrar-Maserati engine. In base form, it was rated at 385 hp and 333 lb-ft (451 Nm), before being uprated to 395 hp for the slightly more performance-focused GranSport model unveiled in 2004. It was offered with a six-speed manual gearbox, which is the one to gun for if you want to avoid the failure costs associated with Maserati’s paddle-shift automated sequential transmission called Cambiocorsa.

Depreciation has hit the Maserati hard. On Auto Trader, there are a handful of models available with relatively low mileage for less than $15,000 – albeit all with the Cambiocorsa. One listed by Continental Imports in Illinois has just 36,247 miles (58,333 km) under its belt and a price tag of $14,700. Another low-mileage example is available from Cincinnati Used Auto Sales with 37,533 miles (60,403 km) and a $14,495 asking price.

It’s worth noting, however, that roughly 85 per cent of Maserati Coupe models sold in the United States came with the company’s Cambiocorsa transmission which DeMuro says is absolutely “terrible.” Those in the market for a bargain Maserati should try and find one of the rarer and more reliable manual gearbox, like the one DeMuro tested.
