The Land Rover Discovery HSE TD6 is one heck of an SUV and in this latest video, CarWow set out to see how the Discovery performs against some other powerful SUVs in its class in a tug of war.
The bright yellow Discovery featured is running a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 delivering 254 hp and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm) of torque and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In the first test, the Land Rover faces off against a VW Touareg R-Line Tech also with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 and pushing out 286 hp and the same 442 lb-ft as the Land Rover. On paper, you’d think it would be a very close contest. It wasn’t and the Land Rover ended up winning easily.

Next up, an Audi Q7 50TDI S Line tries to take down the Land Rover. It uses the same powertrain as the Touareg but weighs roughly 220 lbs (100 kg) more which should give it slightly more traction. The Audi performed better than the VW but ultimately wasn’t able to beat the British SUV.
Last but not least is a Toyota Land Cruiser with a 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder with 174 hp and 331 lb-ft (450 Nm). That’s significantly less than the Discovery but the Toyota does have some impressive off-road features. Nevertheless, it too fell victim to the Land Rover, although it did put up a good fight.
Do these results mean much in the real world? Not really, unless you plan on towing heavy loads, which most SUV owners don’t do.
