Before moving on to the story, it’s worth mentioning that the roll cage of the test car won’t be an accessory for the new-gen BMW 4-Series, as it was only equipped to the prototype to protect the driver in case something went wrong while punishing the tires at the Nurburgring.
Now, as far as the actual car goes, it could be one of the more powerful variants of the 4-Series’ wide range. Everything else remains under wraps, preventing us from seeing the new design, with the massive grille flanked by the slender headlights, new taillamps and bumpers, as well as the redesigned profile.

In addition to the 4-Series Convertible prototype scooped at the German track, our man with the telephoto spotted another test car, in Scandinavia, with its roof down. The subfreezing temperatures didn’t seem to bother the driver, who was probably testing the new mechanism in the cold. Besides letting more natural light in, the car had different front and rear bumpers, smaller exhaust pipes and wheels, so it’s likely a different spec.
From previous scoops and leaks, we know that the entire 2021 4-Series family, including the Coupe, Convertible and Gran Coupe, will mirror the interior design of the latest 3-Series. The engine lineup will be shared with the premium compact sedan and estate, as all of them are based on the CLAR architecture.
Expect the usual four- and six-pot petrol and diesel units, with the latter reserved for markets outside North America. Over here, we might get the 430i and M440i xDrive versions of the car.
BMW will reportedly uncover the new 4-Series this June, and the first model to be presented will probably be the Coupe, followed by the soft-top version and five-door GC. The range-topping M3 and M4 models are expected to make their appearance shortly after that.
