We just heard back from a GM spokesperson who told CarScoops, “We don’t have any comments on speculation”. While that’s open to interpretation, it sounds like it’s in line with GM’s previous statement saying that the event is still on for now. Given that the situation on the ground remains very much fluid, we gather that all options are on the table with a final decision likely to be made and communicated closer to the reveal date. [Update 4/18/2020]
It’s been a question lingering in the minds of many (okay, maybe not that many); will GMC go ahead with the unveiling of the new Hummer EV on May 20 as originally planned before the pandemic pushed the entire world into lock-down?
Last time we checked was on March 31 when a GMC spokesperson told CarScoops that they were “watching the situation closely” and “no decision has been made” to cancel the debut at this point.
Now, MuscleCarsAndTrucks claims they have “learned” that unveiling has been canceled in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

The report says this is backed up by the fact that those invited to the event haven’t been notified that it’s still on track. Also, since GM’s factories are closed, development of the electric truck might have been paused as well, and finally, it wouldn’t be responsible to host such a big event given the current situation in Michigan, where more than 2,000 people have lost their lives due to the novel virus.
While such a move makes sense, we have reached out to GMC and will give you an update if they get back to us. It is possible though that like Genesis and Hyundai recently, GMC may choose to do a digital unveiling online.
In the meantime, we will remind you that the new electric Hummer will be offered as a pickup truck under the GMC nameplate, with an impressive 1,000 HP and 11,500 lb-ft (15,592 Nm) of torque available on tap. This will rocket it to 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 3 seconds, according to the official estimate.
The range will eventually grow to include other versions, with single, dual or triple electric motors. It’s believed that the 1,000 HP model will feature the latter layout. An SUV is on the cards as well.
