The EPA range estimate saga of the Porsche Taycan continues with the entry-level 4S variant, which officially offers 203 miles (326 km) out of a full battery charge but could it be that the figure is understated?
Matt Farah took a Porsche Taycan 4S on a quick trip in a bid to find out how many miles can you travel between charges out there, in the real world. The drive didn’t involve any tactics like hypermiling, just a regular trip with the air-condition and the cooled seats engaged, as well as the cruise control set at 70 mph (112 km/h).

As it turns out, the Porsche Taycan 4S beat the EPA range estimate by quite a margin as it managed to travel 276 miles (444 km) before stopping at a charger with an indicated 18 miles (29 km) of range left in the battery. Add the two figures and you’re left with an EV that offered 294 miles (473 km) out of a full battery charge that day, 91 miles (146 km) more than its official EPA range.
The Porsche Taycan 4S will be eventually offered with two battery options: a smaller 79kWh unit combined with 522 HP and a bigger 93.4 kWh ‘Performance Battery Plus’ unit that also boosts the output to 563 HP during overboost. Under regular driving, the dual-motor setup of the Porsche Taycan 4S produces 482 HP and 479 lb-ft of torque.
Despite the 4S currently being the entry-level model of the Porsche Taycan range, there’s nothing entry-level-ish about the way it accelerates; 0-60 mph (96 km/h) comes in 3.8 seconds while top speed sits at 155 mph (250 km/h).
Earlier this year, the same thing happened with the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S models following their disappointing EPA range figures – 201 and 192 miles (323 km and 309 km) respectively. Reviews from different media outlets revealed that the range-topping versions of the Porsche Taycan are capable of offering 250 to 280 miles (402 to 450 km) of normal driving on average out of a fully charged battery, crushing their official EPA range figures.
