Just a few days after the 2020 Hyundai Veloster N was presented with an optional eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, motoring journalists in South Korea have already had the opportunity to put the revised hot hatch through its paces.
The Veloster N, much like its siblings, the i30 N and i30 Fastback N, is a hugely impressive car, so much so that it actually won Road & Track’s Performance Car of the Year test late last year when equipped with the standard six-speed manual transmission.
The test below from YouTuber Asian Petrolhead isn’t the most exhilarating review of the new 2020 model we’re likely to see but it does give us a good first impression of what it’s like to drive and how the new wet dual-clutch transmission performs on a race circuit.

Anyone who has driven one of Hyundai’s N models will know that when outfitted with the available electronic limited-slip differential, they can take corners at impressive speeds with very little understeer. It’s no different here and the addition of a dual-clutch transmission allows you to keep your hands on the wheel while your face is ripped off from the g-forces experienced during cornering.
The reviewer notes that when the car is driven in its normal mode, the eight-speed shifts very smoothly. However, when it is in Sport or N mode, the transmission gives you a nice kick as it changes gears.
Hyundai has implemented a series of different systems to make the DCT as enjoyable as possible. For example, it includes an ‘N Grin Shift’ (NGS) mode that increases torque by 7 per cent from 260 lb-ft (352 Nm) to 278 lb-ft (377 Nm) for 20 seconds by allowing turbocharger overboost and maximizing transmission response.
