Volkswagen Group’s head of Design Klaus Bischoff is launching a design competition on Instagram, inviting professional and up-and-coming automotive designers to submit their proposals on what an ID.3 would look like in 30 years time.

The competition starts today, on April 27, World Design Day, and will remain open for the next four weeks. Participating designers will have to upload their proposals on their own Instagram profile and tag images with the #VolkswagenDesign2050 hashtag.

The goal for Volkswagen is to make it easier for designers to directly engage with them and provide them with qualified feedback, especially for the ones who are just starting their careers. Automotive design is mostly done behind closed doors with strict confidentiality these days and the designers have to think up to 12 years ahead with their creations.

“We want to open up to the discourse and provide a platform to all interested designers,” Klaus Bischoff said. “The competition is a great opportunity for everyone aiming to make a mark for themselves.”

Klaus Bischoff will personally shortlist his three favorite entries and will invite their designers to Wolfsburg, where the winning design will be 3D-printed as a reward on a scale of 1:4.

Meanwhile, ID.3 resumes production

Last week Volkswagen re-opened their Zwickau factory and resumed production of ID.3, albeit in a reduced capacity of 50 cars per day. The German carmaker plans to stick in its original plan to deliver the first 30,000 ID.3 First Edition models to customers at the same time this summer.
