In a world where demand for minivans or as Europeans call them, Multi Purpose Vehicles (MPV for short) is dwindling, BMW remains unfazed as it’s putting the finishing touches on the second generation of its 2 Series Active Tourer.
There are the latest spy photos of the all-new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer (codename U08) that will debut sometime in 2021 based on an updated version of the current UKL front-wheel drive platform.
Since the longer 2 Series Gran Tourer will reportedly be discontinued, the second-generation 2 Series Active Tourer is said to get a slightly longer wheelbase and body to offer more room for passengers and luggage. A third row of seats is likely to come as an option.

That’s not easy to see in these spy shots but what’s pretty clear to notice, despite the full body camouflage, is the more crossover-like design the 2021 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will adopt. As the saying goes, if you can’t beat them, join them.
The interior will see a massive upgrade as well, especially when it comes to the infotainment and safety tech. An earlier photo we showed you revealed a dual display setup that suggests the Active Tourer will get a curved infotainment display similar to the one in the upcoming iX electric SUV. The cabin will also get a new shifter in the shape of a switch, head up display with augmented reality, gesture control, as well as the networking of lighting, navigation and assistance systems.
In the engine compartment, the next-generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is expected to offer 1.5- and 2.0-liter gasoline, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrains shared with the latest 1 Series. Compared to the current model, the internal combustion engines will offer a bit more power and torque, and will be mated to a Getrag eight-speed dual-clutch transmission for the first time.
There’s also talk of an M Performance variant with all-wheel drive and around 300 horsepower but that hasn’t been officially confirmed yet.
