The first production-spec SSC Tuatara was unveiled to the world at February’s 2020 Philadelphia Auto Show and the automaker has now released a high-paced clip showing the hypercar in action.
SSC North America, formerly Shelby SuperCars, was founded by Jerod Shelby back in 1998 and was once responsible for building the world’s fastest production car, the SSC Ultimate Aero.
Fast forward roughly 13 years and the Tuatara is now its sole model, one the company has set some ambitious performance targets for. The most notable is the claim it can exceed 300 mph (483 km/h).

This video shows Shelby driving the Tuatara on an empty road, offering us a superb chance to hear the vehicle’s epic engine and get a sense of what it’s like to be inside the cockpit. While supercars and hypercars of yesteryear were often cramped and had horrendous visibility, the interior of the Tuatara appears very airy thanks to glass roof panels in the doors and even small pieces of glass to the side of the A-pillars.
Powering the Tuatara is a 5.9-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine with a flat-plane crank, an 8.8:1 compression ratio, and the ability to rev through to 8,800 rpm. It pumps out no less than 1,350 hp when running on 91 octane fuel but that jumps to 1,750 hp when it is fueled by E85 ethanol. SSC says the car can hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.5 seconds but that time has yet to be verified.
In this clip, SSC has included hashtags that include #lifebeginsat300 and #yearofthetuatara. Could this mean SSC will look to exceed 300 mph in the car before the end of the year? We certainly hope so.
