What If VW Made A True Arteon Coupe As A Poor Man’s Audi A5 Coupe?

The Volkswagen Arteon has been imagined as a coupe – a true coupe this time with only two and not four doors as the real one, with a sporty aftermarket twist.

The independently made illustrations come courtesy of Zoki Nanco and portray it with two less doors, a shorter wheelbase and more angular roof and window frames.

We also see red ‘R’ badges, as well as bloated front and rear fenders, aftermarket wheels, upgraded brakes and a lowered ride that has turned the Arteon into an interesting, yet theoretical proposal for a mid-size coupe.

Back to reality

By now, it’s clear that Volkswagen won’t launch a coupe version of the Arteon, which would be positioned as a more affordable alternative to the Audi A5 Coupe, but they will introduce a Shooting Brake when the facelifted iteration premieres sometime this year. The estate variant will feature a sloping roofline and will likely adopt the entire engine lineup of the regular Arteon.

Speaking of engines, the mid-cycle refresh will also include a hot R variant of the mid-size car. In all likelihood, it will arrive with the same 2.0-liter turbo-four unit as the upcoming Golf R, that’s believed to develop 333 PS (328 HP / 245 kW), hooked up to the dual-clutch automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

Previous reports also claimed that it might pack a new 3.0-liter VR6 twin-turbo mill, making around 400 PS (394 HP / 294 kW), but there are slim chances of it boasting such a powertrain.

The Arteon R is expected in the fourth quarter of 2020, while the Arteon R Shooting Brake should premiere next year.
