Pininfarina is looking to expand its offering to customers by exploring new designs and realizations for user experiences. The result of this project is dubbed AutonoMIA, a responsive, multi-sensorial on-board experience demonstrator.

The Turin-based company is looking into how technology, from AI (Artificial Intelligence) to 5G, and from display to haptics or sensors to natural interfaces, can be leveraged to enrich the driving experience.

Ultimately, AutonoMIA is also meant to be leveraged, customized and further developed for Pininfarina’s clients, and was the result of several new strategic partnerships.

The main one is with ART, experienced in creating user interfaces for automotive cockpits. The Umbrian company provided Pininfarina with a highly advanced and customizable infotainment platform, plus all the hardware and middle-ware.

Meanwhile, the seats and all the padded surfaces were supplied by ARAS.

“AutonoMIA shows how Pininfarina may combine experience design with creative technology, reinventing the on-board experience at a time when digitalization, connectivity, data and artificial intelligence are substantially redefining mobility,” said the company’s CEO, Silvio Pietro Angori.

“With its Experience Design team and partners, Pininfarina today helps its customers through mobility experiences which are getting more and more digital.”

Aside from all its other attributes, AutonoMIA also revisits the function, position, individual and combined use of screens inside the car – such as the concept of a dedicated screen for the front seat passenger.

In future applications, AutonoMIA will be able to explore Augmented Reality (AR) through tech provided by its partner WayRay, as well as advanced holographic, full-color head-up display systems.
