Back at the SEMA Show in late 2016, professional drifter Ryan Tuerck unveiled a crazy Ferrari 458 Italia-powered Toyota 86. Professional photographer and YouTuber Larry Chen recently had the opportunity to speak with Tuerck about the epic project and just what makes the car so special.
Tuerck says the project was born out of his desire to perform the craziest engine swap imaginable. Arguably the craziest engine swap you could do would be to take a high-revving V12, V10, or V8 Formula 1 powertrain and slot it into a street car or a race car. However, F1 engines are extremely expensive and hard to find so the drifter settled for the next best thing; a supercar engine.
The racer eventually decided to use a Ferrari 458 Italia engine after jumping behind the wheel of one some six months earlier. Given his expertise competing in the Toyota 86 in Formula Drift, it was the logical choice to base the project around.

This being a drift car, Tuerck wasn’t satisfied to just slot in the Ferrari’s standard 4.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 and call it a day. Consequently, this custom 86 features a bespoke exhaust system as well as nitrous and now churns out roughly 560 hp at the wheels.
Towards the end of the video, the drifter got a little keen on the throttle and ended up sliding the 458-powered Toyota 86 off road and into some small bushes. Fortunately, it wasn’t damaged, meaning Chen was able to take us along for a ride in the passenger seat.
