The all-electric Lotus Evija proves that aerodynamic performance doesn’t have to come at the expense of beautiful styling.
First presented to the world last year, the Evija will not only be the fastest vehicle ever produced by the British brand but also the world’s most powerful production car thanks to four electric motors that combine to produce 1,973 hp and 1,254 lb-ft (1,700 Nm) of torque. No matter how much power a vehicle has, however, it needs to also look good in order to attract customers and in this clip with Lotus designer Russell Carr, we discover what makes the Evija such a good-looker.
The 30-minute video was recently uploaded to YouTuber by the Petersen Automotive Museum and features Carr explaining pretty much every aspect of the car’s exterior and interior designs.

Not only was Carr inspired by other Lotus models in the design of the Evija but he also took inspiration from many iconic airplanes including the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. Perhaps the most striking exterior detail of the car are the massive venturi tunnels that start just behind the doors and stretch back to the rear of the car. Moreover, there are broad shoulders out back and taillights that mimic the look of the afterburners of a jet.
The interior of the Evija also looks like a lovely place to sit. To ensure the car is as light as possible, the cabin is quite minimalist and filled with carbon fiber. For example, the seats are made from carbon fiber and there are very few traditional buttons and switches, while references to motorsport are made through the F1-inspired steering wheel.
