When you think about Batman, it’s usually of him chasing down bad guys in some dark alleyway in Gotham City. However, some people just have an affinity for shiny things, which is where Swarovski comes in.

The Austrian jewellery manufacturer is selling a limited edition Batmobile, embellished with over 16,000 hand-set crystals using a proprietary technique. Only 200 units are to be made, each costing $8,900.

Now that’s a lot of money for what is basically a decoration object – the company makes it clear in the ad that this is not a toy, while calling it “an amazing gift for Batman and DC fans and collectors.”

We’re not so sure about that. Any real Batman fan would know that the Dark Knight wouldn’t be caught dead driving a bedazzled Batmobile, because it’s just silly and goes against the character’s entire backstory.

Black rubber tires and polished metal details complete the look of this scale model, which is based on the Tim Burton Batmobile from the Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992) films featuring Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Strictly in terms of design, this is widely regarded as one of the best interpretations of the Batmobile, along with the one from Batman: The Animated Series.

What’s ironic is that for this much money, you can actually purchase much more comic book-accurate Batman memorabilia, not to mention actual life-sized cars on the used market. In certain European markets, you can buy a brand new entry-level Dacia Sandero for under $9,000, which seems to us like a more useful purchase.
