The Cupra Formentor will arrive in European dealerships in the last quarter of this year as the brand’s first standalone model.
It will be positioned above the recently facelifted Cupra Ateca as the marque’s range-topping SUV – though the carmaker would rather you called it an SUV coupe. As with the latest SEAT Leon and other compact vehicles from the VW Group, the Formentor is built on the MQB Evo platform.
You wouldn’t be wrong if you called it a high-riding Cupra Leon, especially considering the powertrains it offers.

The Cupra Formentor featured in Autogefühl’s video below packs a 2.0-liter TSI turbocharged four-cylinder rated at 310 PS (306 HP) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. It comes hooked with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission and a 4Drive AWD system as standard. No performance figures have been released yet but we should expect a similar, if not slightly lower, 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) time to the 2021 Cupra Ateca’s 4.9 seconds.
Customers can also choose a plug-in hybrid system featuring a 150 PS (148 HP) 1.4-liter TSI petrol engine, a 115 PS (113 HP) electric motor and a 13 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. This ‘eHybrid’ powertrain offers a total of 245 PS (242 HP) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, lower fuel consumption than the 2.0 TSI model, and an all-electric range of 50 km (31 miles).
The following video features a detailed presentation of the Cupra Formentor, focusing on the exterior design, interior and the powertrains. Until the first driving impressions become available, it’s probably the most complete look at Cupra’s first standalone model.
