Hyundai’s design boss SangYup Lee continues to review the brand’s concept cars and the latest to get the walkaround video treatment is the 45 EV study.
Unveiled last year at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Hyundai 45 EV has a particular design that’s loosely based on the 1974 Hyundai Pony Coupe. The Korean automaker says that the 45 study unites its past and its future.
That is actually true, as the concept vehicle heralds a production compact EV that should look a lot like it, at least according to the spy shots we’ve seen so far.

Defined by hard lines, sharp angles, and a striking, diamond-shaped silhouette, the Hyundai 45 EV demonstrates how new electric vehicle technology gives designers the freedom to rethink the exterior and interior design of cars.
In the walkaround video, Hyundai Head of Design SangYup Lee provides interesting insight into the 45 concept car, which was the second Hyundai concept car to embody the brand’s new design identity, Sensuous Sportiness.
For example, the name is a reference to both the 45 years since the Pony Coupe’s release and the 45-degree angles in its exterior design. SangYup Lee also talks about the inspiration for the 45’s design and shares new details on exterior and interior design features.
The unique double sliding doors are particularly striking, opening towards the front and the back of the car to reveal a spacious interior. The dedicated EV platform, shared with the Prophecy four-door coupe EV concept, allowed designers to maximize space.
Hyundai claims this interior feels larger than that of other C-segment cars, but there’s more to the cabin than the space. Highlights include the premium lounge design, connected in-car experience, and the swivel seats, which can be rotated to “welcome” the driver and make it easier to enter the vehicle.
