A 27-year-old man in Queensland, Australia recently got the fright of his life when he noticed an eastern brown snake in the cabin of his ute while driving along a highway at 100 km/h (62 mph).

The Queensland Police report that a local road policing officer spotted ‘Jimmy’ traveling at 123 km/h (76 mph) on the Dawson Highway on June 15. After pulling over the man, the officer quickly discovered this was no ordinary traffic stop.

The panicked 27-year-old can be seen telling the officer that he discovered the highly venomous snake as he was driving. He said that it slithered up between his legs and began striking the driver’s seat. While trying to maintain control of the ute and slow down, the man told the officer he used a seat belt and a work knife he had with him to fight off the snake.

He ultimately managed to kill the snake, put it in the bed of his ute and then raced to the hospital, believing that he had been bitten and could need urgent medical assistance.

Queensland Police say they are no strangers to getting every excuse imaginable for speeding, but the officer who performed the traffic stop immediately knew the man was telling the truth. He saw the snake in the bed of the ute and quickly called for medical assistance. When the paramedics arrived, they found out that Jimmy hadn’t actually been bitten and he was just in shock from the near-miss.

“It was pretty terrifying, I’ve never been so happy to see red and blue lights,” Jimmy said.
