The Test Drive video game series will make a return almost a decade after the last installment with the announcement of Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown.

The original Test Drive Unlimited and Test Drive Unlimited 2 games paved the way for massive open-world racing games and despite their issues, generated a loyal fan base (this writer included). The new game will be developed by Nacon and Kylotonn, also known as KT Racing, and aims to build upon the success of its predecessors.

In a video announcing Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown, it has been confirmed the game’s map will be a 1:1 recreation of a real island. The original game was based on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu and had around 1,000 miles (1,600 km) of roads that gamers could explore. The second iteration expanded on this map by also added the Spanish island of Ibiza. All up, TDU2 had roughly 2,000 miles (3,200 km) of roads and it remains one of the largest open-world maps ever.

Not only did TDU and TDU 2 have hundreds of cars to choose from, but they included motorcycles and customizable properties that you could purchase. You could even customize the wardrobe of your character.

KT Racing will use WRC 8’s handling system for the game to try and replicate real-world driving as closely as possible.

No launch date for the game has been announced nor have any details been provided about what consoles it will be available on.
