Mercedes is updating the G-Class (they’re calling it a 2020 model in Europe) with more equipment and adds more personalization options and exterior colors to make its iconic off-roader even more suited to the needs of its customers.

The latest G-Class update also includes the introduction of a new “Desert” off-road mode, which tunes the powertrain for maximum traction on sandy terrains. The new drive mode is activated through the Dynamic Select switch and combines late upshifting, more direct throttle response, and an adjusted ESP to boost the G-Class’ capability on the sand.

As part of the refresh, Mercedes is turning the G 400d, which was previously available as a special model, into a regular member of the European range. The G 400d employs a more powerful version of the 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine with 326 HP (330 PS) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque available from just 1,200 rpm.

As before, the range is completed with the 282 HP G 350d and the range-topping G 63 AMG, which uses a biturbo 4.0-liter V8 with 576 HP (585 PS).

Mercedes will also offer three new solid paint options through their G manufaktur personalization program as a tribute to the Geländewagen’s classic colors: Classic Grey, Deep Green and China Blue.

Mercedes has enhanced the standard equipment level of the G-Class by adding, among others, the widescreen cockpit, a frameless rear-view mirror and the Parking Garage with a reversing camera. Customers can also opt for the popular Night Package without the AMG Line and Stainless Steel Packages. The Night Package includes heat-insulating dark-tinted glass, door mirror housings, and radiator grille finished in Obsidian Black, darkened turn signals, reversing lamps, and headlights.

The Stainless Steel package offers a spare wheel cover, a set of running boards, door sills, and loading sill protection in stainless steel. Finally, there’s a new 20-inch 5-twin-spoke wheel design available exclusively with the AMG Line in high-gloss black or Himalaya grey.

Prices in Germany for the updated Mercedes G-Class start from €99,446 ($113,400 in current exchange rates) for the G 350d, from €102,694 ($117,150) for the G 400d and from €154,309 ($176,000) for the G 63 AMG.
