Nissan has announced customers of its electric vehicles will be able to pay for parking with electricity.
In what the automaker describes as a world first, EV owners will be able to discharge power from their vehicle’s battery pack to pay for parking. Admittedly, the system will only work at the Nissan Pavilion exhibition center in Yokohama, Japan that opened its doors to the public on August 1.

The Pavilion is located near the company’s headquarters and will be open until October 23 as a showcase for the carmaker’s advanced technologies. For example, guests can experience the ProPILOT advanced driver assistance system, Nissan’s Invisible-to-Vehicle (I2V) technology, while also enjoying services like EV car-sharing and rental bicycles. Those who visit the site will also be able to play a virtual tennis match with Grand Slam champion and Nissan brand ambassador Naomi Osaka.
Nissan is also offering virtual experiences of its Formula E racing car and the all-new Ariya crossover. There’s also a café on site powered by Nissan Leafs and solar energy.
“The Pavilion is a place where customers can see, feel, and be inspired by our near-future vision for society and mobility,” said Nissan chief executive Makoto Uchida. “As the world shifts to electric mobility, EVs will be integrated into society in ways that go beyond just transportation.”
While paying for parking with electricity is just limited to this one Nissan site, a scheme like this could prove quite popular among EV owners if it’s ever introduced in public spaces.
