The Woodward Dream Cruise is billed as the “world’s largest one-day automotive event” as it typically attracts more than a million people to southeast Michigan.

Unfortunately, this year’s event has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, that hasn’t stopped the Oakland County Republican Party from announcing plans to ‘replace’ it with a MAGA (Make America Great Again) Classic Car Cruise in support of police and President Donald Trump. That’s pretty ironic as the cancellation of the Woodward Dream Cruise can be partially caulked to the Trump Administration’s failure to contain the virus.

The MAGA Classic Car Cruise will be held on August 15th and it encourages people to decorate their cars in support of the President and / or police. It also encourages people to stop by the Oakland County Republican Party headquarters to pick up a free Trump yard sign.

While the Woodward Dream Cruise attracts typically attracts more than 40,000 cars, the response to the MAGA Classic Car Cruise has been tepid to say the least. Only 86 people have said they’re going and just 384 have expressed interest in attending. Despite the lackluster response, some people have criticized the event as one Facebook user said “Stay home, knuckleheads.”

Speaking to MLive, Oakland County Republican Party Chairman Rocky Raczkowski said “With the traditional Dream Cruise canceled due to our current situation, we felt the road was wide open for OCRP to host our own MAGA Classic Car Cruise.” The OCRP added people should stay in their vehicles, practice safe distancing and only have family members in their car “to avoid the mask requirement.”

Unfortunately, those safety precautions appear to be little more than lip service as the Oakland County Republican Party Facebook page shows recent events featuring dozens of unmasked people not social distancing.

Oakland County alone has had 11,789 cases of COVID-19 and 1,085 deaths. It’s considered a hot spot in the state of Michigan which has so far seen 84,707 cases and 6,221 deaths.
