Genesis has established itself as the best-selling premium brand in its home market of South Korea, beating out Mercedes-Benz.
Auto industry sales reveal that Genesis sold a total of 60,006 vehicles in the January-July period in Korea compared to Mercedes-Benz that sold 41,583 vehicles and BMW that sold 29,246 vehicles over the same time period. This impressive sales figure from Genesis represents a 65 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

This isn’t the first time Genesis has outsold its German competition, The Korea Herald reports. In 2016, the automaker easily outsold Mercedes-Benz and BMW, shifting 66,278 units compared to the 56,343 of Mercedes-Benz and the 48,459 of BMW. However, Genesis has lost the top spot to Mercedes-Benz for the last three years while also losing ground to BMW in 2017 and 2018.
In 2019, Mercedes-Benz led the Korean premium car segment with 78,133 sales compared to the 56,801 sales of Genesis and BMW with 44,191 vehicles sold.
Key to the success of Genesis this year is the all-new GV80. Launched in the local market in March, Genesis has already sold 20,016 units as of July, almost hitting its 2020 goal of 24,000 units. In addition, the new G80 is selling well and accounted for 28,993 sales in the first half of 2020.
The forthcoming Genesis GV70 SUV and the facelifted G70 will also land before the end of the year and further bolster sales.
