Volkswagen will enter the electric SUV segment with the ID.4, which will make its world premiere at the end of next month.

The compact model, which is the second vehicle based on the MEB EV-dedicated platform, after the ID.3 hatchback, has been brought to our attention once more, with a set of official sketches that gloss over its design.

“The ID.4 represents an electric design evolution. Its exterior design is clean, flowing and powerful. It appears strong and self-confident in a new way. This is mainly due to the seamless, aerodynamic style of our ID. family, which we have transferred to the SUV segment for the first time with the ID.4. This means that gentle, soft transitions alternate with sharp, clear separating edges. The design looks as if shaped by the wind itself”, said VW Group’s chief designer, Klaus Zyciora, who is responsible for the looks of the car, along with his team.

Set to launch in Europe and China first, and later in the United States, the ID.4 will be offered initially with an electric motor believed to produce 201 HP and 229 lb-ft (310 Nm) of torque powering the real wheels only. An all-wheel drive variant will launch later, with a second motor powering the front wheels and an expected combined output of 302 HP and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm).

All versions will feature a high-voltage battery, positioned in the underbody to create a low center of gravity and well-balanced axle load distribution. Depending on the battery size, the electric vehicle from Wolfsburg will have a driving range of up to 311 miles (500 km) in the WLTP cycle.

Pre-production of the ID.4 has already started at the Anting factory in China and at Zwickau, in Germany, and will be followed by the Tennessee site, in the U.S., in 2022.
