The 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is inching ever closer to production and according to the latest report, it will be all we could have hoped for, and more.

We’ve known for quite some time that the Corvette Z06 will use a variant of the 5.5-liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine from the C8.R race car. However, specifics regarding this engine have been a little hard to come by. Not anymore.

According to Motor Trend’s Jonny Liberman, the engine of the Z06 won’t just be naturally-aspirated but it will also rev through to an incredible 9,000 rpm. That means it will rev higher than the Lamborghini Huracan Evo’s V10, the Aventador SVJ’s V12, and the V12 of the Ferrari 812 Superfast that spins to 8,900 rpm. The 4.0-liter six-cylinder of the forthcoming 992 GT3 and GT3 RS should also rev to 9,000 rpm, putting into perspective just how special the Z06’s powertrain could be.

It is unclear just how much power the Corvette’s engine will have but it is speculated it could be rated at around 625 hp with perhaps as much as 485 lb-ft (657 Nm) of torque. While that’s not as much as the supercharged C7 Z06 with its 650 hp and 650 lb-ft (881 Nm), the lack of a supercharger will make the new Z06 all the more special.

If the reported figures about the new Z06’s engine prove true, it will be the most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 on the market, easily eclipsing the 526 hp Voodoo V8 of the Shelby GT350 and GT350R.
