What will Crab Mode entail? Some media outlets suggest that it will be similar to the Tank Turn feature of the upcoming Rivian R1T and R1S that allows the electric vehicles to spin on their own axis, much like what a tank with tracks can do. Fox News Autos believes GMC’s Crab Mode will work alongside a four-wheel steering system that will allow the Hummer EV to drive diagonally, much like how a crab walks.

While a lot of mystery surrounds the driving model, we shouldn’t have to wait too long to find out more as GMC is expected to unveil the Hummer EV in the coming months before it hits the market in the fall of 2021.

GMC has previously confirmed the vehicle will have an electric powertrain pumping out 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft (15,574 Nm) of wheel torque, reportedly enough to send the truck to 60 mph (96 km/h) in as little as three seconds. We still don’t know how many electric motors the Hummer EV will have, but most reports point towards it featuring either two or three motors.

It’s also unconfirmed how large the battery pack of the vehicle will be. With that being said, GM has previously said the batteries it is developing will have capacities ranging from 50 kWh to 200 kWh.
