The wait for an all-new Hummer-badged GM product is almost over as the Detroit giant has announced the GMC Hummer EV will be revealed on Tuesday, October 20.

Described as a “supertruck”, the Hummer EV gets teased once again in a short video that shows the electric pickup’s so-called Crab Mode feature in action. The video starts with an actual crab moving on sand in its characteristic sideways manner.

We then get to see the GMC Hummer EV (its front and rear wheels, at least) steering in the same direction, enabling the truck to move diagonally. According to GM, “the supertruck’s industry-leading Crab Mode feature is enabled by the GMC Hummer EV’s four-wheel steering capability, allowing it to move in a diagonal direction”.

This functionality is described by GM as being “tailor-made for off-roading customers”. For now, it remains unclear whether the front and rear wheels can turn in opposite directions too, enabling a similar feature to Rivian R1T’s Tank Turn – though we don’t see any reason for that not to happen. Unfortunately, the video does not reveal anything else than the wheels, which look chunky and feature all-terrain tires.

The automaker says customer reservations for the GMC Hummer EV will be available through GMC.com on October 20, at the same time the unveiling is scheduled. GMC will share details about how to watch the debut closer to the reveal.

Production of the GMC Hummer EV is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2021, which means the electric truck will debut for the 2022 model year. GMC has previously confirmed the pickup’s electric powertrain delivers 1,000 hp and 11,500 lb-ft (15,574 Nm) of wheel torque, reportedly enough to send the truck to 60 mph (96 km/h) in as little as three seconds.

It remains to be seen how many electric motors the Hummer EV will have, but most reports mention at least two of them. The battery pack’s size is unknown as well.
