Volvo is shedding more light on its new Advanced Air Cleaner technology that’s been introduced into all 60- and 90-series models in their range.
Described as the “world-first premium air-quality technology in cars”, Volvo’s new Advanced Air Cleaner combines a synthetic fiber-based filter, ionization, and a sensor that measures PM 2.5 levels inside the cabin.
The amount of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) in the air is the widely used indicator for air quality, with many urban areas around the globe suffering from PM 2.5 values that exceed the recommended levels by the World Health Organisation.

Volvo’s new air quality system cleans the air inside the cabin, keeping up to 95 percent of all PM 2.5 particles outside the vehicle and thus limiting the health effects that are associated with air pollution and fine particulates.
Owners of Volvo models fitted with the system can also schedule an extra cleaning of the cabin air ahead of their journey via the company’s Volvo On Call smartphone application.
“With our Advanced Air Cleaner technology, you can rest assured that the air you breathe inside your Volvo is cleaner and healthier,” said Anders Löfvendahl, Senior Technical Expert on Cabin Air Quality at Volvo Cars. “We believe that clean air is good for you, both from a health and from a safety perspective, and we will continue to push the envelope in this area.”
In addition, Volvo says that they have established strict sourcing requirements for suppliers in order to minimize the generation and emission of odors from parts and materials used inside their cars. The carmaker has even a special team of odor assessors, internally known as “The Noses”, who test components individually as well as on a complete car level for unwanted odor emissions.
