A rare 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing recently listed up for auction at Bring A Trailer has sold for $1,152,000.
It’s not all that often that vehicles as expensive and rare as the 300 SL find their way onto the popular online auction site, as usually they are sold by auction houses like RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Company, and Mecum. Evidently, the selling dealership thought they could generate enough interest for the car on Bring A Trailer – and they were right.

A look at Glen March, which lists recent auction results for Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing models, reveals that a $1.152 million sales price is right in line with what other examples are going for. In January, an example with 41,000 miles on the clock was sold by RM Sotheby’s for $1.27 million. Last year, a handful of other 300 SL Gullwing models sold for between $1 million and $1.5 million depending on their condition and how many miles they had on the clock.
The model sold at Bring A Trailer was a 1957 car and originally delivered to a customer in Belgium who kept the German classic until 1981. The car then spent the following 22 years in the UK and was later imported into Canada.
A comprehensive restoration was performed between 2014 and 2016. During this time, it was returned to its original shade of Blaugrau and the interior was reupholstered to include blue-grey plaid cloth covers on the seat cushions. There is also blue leather over the bolsters, seat backs, door panels, sills, and center tunnel.
The car has roughly 91,000 km (~56,000 miles) on the clock and is fitted with a numbers-matching engine and transmission.
