The North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year Awards have announced the semifinalists which will compete for top honors in each category.
Among those competing are eight cars, four trucks and 15 utility vehicles which are either “all-new or substantially new.” Like everything else this year, the awards have been impacted by the coronavirus pandemic as vehicle entries were accepted later than usual to accommodate a number of late launches.
Without further ado, the contenders for Car of the Year include the Acura TLX, Cadillac CT4/CT4-V, Genesis G80, Hyundai Elantra, Kia K5, Mercedes E-Class, Nissan Sentra and Polestar 2. That’s a pretty diverse crowd as it includes everything from mainstream sedans to luxury cars and an electric vehicle.

On the truck side of things, there are only four contenders and two of them are effectively just trim levels. Putting that aside, the Ford F-150, Ford Super Duty, Jeep Gladiator Mojave and Ram 1500 TRX will battle for the title of Truck of the Year.
Variety isn’t an issue for Utility of the Year as semifinalists include the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Ford Bronco Sport. There’s also the Ford Mustang Mach E, Genesis GV80, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Seltos, Kia Sorento and Land Rover Defender. Rounding out the contenders are the Mazda CX-30, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4 Prime, Toyota Venza and Volvo XC40 P8 Recharge.
A panel of 50 jurors will vote for three finalists in each category and the narrowed down field will be announced in December. In January, the winners of the 2021 North American Car, Utility and Truck of the Year Awards will be revealed.
