A British driver has been convicted after being caught doing more than 100 mph (160 km/h) on the wrong side of a 30 mph (48 km/h) road in Sunderland, UK.
Horrifying dashcam video captured 27-year-old Aaron Lee of Merle Terrace, Sunderland, driving a black Mercedes-Benz (which appears to be a C-Class) at high speed along a three-lane road on August 23, 2019. It’s not just the speed that is shocking but the fact that Lee drove through a pedestrian crossing on the wrong side of the road, only managing to just squeeze between the traffic lights and a car traveling in the other direction.
Speaking with Chronicle Live, PC Alan Brown from the local police’s Collision Investigation Unit was shocked at the dangerous driving.

“This is one of the worst cases of driving I have seen during my time in policing,” he said. “Over the years, I’ve dealt with hundreds of dangerous driver cases and this is the fastest I can ever recall somebody traveling in a 30mph limit. It is a busy road near a hospital, with houses on either side and a constant flow of traffic – it beggars belief. As you’ll see, the quality of the footage is excellent and I’d like to thank the member of the public who captured this vital evidence and submitted it to us via our website. They absolutely did the right thing and this has now led to Lee’s conviction.”
Brown revealed that authorities needed to prove the minimum speed of the Mercedes-Benz in order to secure a conviction in court. They did this by counting every frame of the video and attending the scene to take reference points.
The reckless driver pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in court earlier this month and will be sentenced on October 23.
