If you are a frequent visitor to our site, you’ll probably remember the story of Richard Hammond’s old Ferrari 550 Maranello offered in an online auction last month. In the words of The Grand Tour presenter himself, this car is the only one he regretted selling and we can see why.

Drivetribe borrowed the red Ferrari 550 Maranello for a small reunion with its previous owners, which includes not only Richard Hammond but Harry Metcalfe as well.

In fact, this car must be one of the most well-known examples of a 550 Maranello in the UK as it was regularly featured in Evo magazine during Metcalfe’s ownership.

The Ferrari 550 Maranello signified the company’s return in the front-engined V12 league, marking a new era for the Italian carmaker. It was also one of the last Ferraris that were available only with a manual transmission -the later 575 model introduced the F1-style, paddle-shift single-clutch gearbox.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V12, which makes 480 HP and 418 lb-ft (568 Nm) of torque. 0-62 mph (100 km/h) comes in around 4.5 seconds while top speed is set at 199 mph (320 km/h).

Metcalfe sold the 550 Maranello to Hammond after using it as his daily driver, putting just over 30k miles on it in 18 months. As Hammond explains in the video linked below, he loved the big V12 Italian GT but an unfortunate housing choice forced him to sell it and he regrets it ever since.

The car was eventually sold for just £60,000 (around $78k in current exchange rates), which makes the 550 Maranello an absolute bargain in Ferrari world.
