With Mercedes about to expand their A-Class range with the addition of a 4-door model, this prototype was spotted recently wearing some extra tight camouflage.
What we mean by tight is that there is no additional body cladding, so what you see is what you get – as long as you can figure out what you’re looking at in the first place.
Thankfully, Mercedes already have a blueprint for that, and it’s called the Concept A Sedan, introduced earlier this year at the 2017 Shanghai Auto Show.
Now, if you recall, Daimler AG chief designer, Gorden Wagener, said that the Concept A Sedan showed that “the time of creases is over” and even used the term “Sensual Purity” in order to usher in a new design era. While we don’t expect the production-ready A-Class Sedan to look as chunky and sporty as the concept, the overall exterior shape should be very close to the Concept A.
One noticeable difference between this prototype and the concept is the absence of Mercedes’ sporty Panamericana front grille, although that might change once the car is fully revealed.
Looks aside, the A-Class sedan is sure to share most of its engine and gearbox options with the regular all-new A-Class hatchback, riding on the updated MFA2 platform. Same goes for the interior, which in previously-seen A-Class prototypes featured a digital instrument cluster and circular air vents, reminiscent of its larger siblings within the range.
As for when we can expect Mercedes to make the A-Class sedan available to the public world wide, sometime next year is our best guess – definitely after the unveiling of the 5-door model.
Once out, the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Sedan will enter direct competition against the Audi A3 Sedan and possibly even the BMW 1-Series Sedan, if the Bavarians ever decide to sell it outside of China, that is.
