We knew it was coming and here it is, the 2021 Hyundai i20 N. Slotting below the beloved i30 N in the automaker’s line-up, the i20 N will act as a direct competitor to the Ford Fiesta ST and takes inspiration from the i20 Coupe WRC car.
Powering the i20 N is a 1.6-liter turbocharged GDi engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission. This engine is good for 201 hp and 202 lb-ft (275 Nm) of torque and as the i20 N only weighs 1,190 kg (2,623 lbs), the same as the i20 Coupe WRC rally car, it can accelerate to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a respectable 6.7 seconds and continue through to 143 mph (230 km/h).

Hyundai says the i20 N’s engine delivers peak torque between 1,750 and 4,500 rpm and hits peak power between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. This broad power band gives the hot hatch impressive acceleration throughout the mid and high-speed range. The engine is featured in other Hyundai models but for the i20 N, it includes a bespoke turbocharger and intercooler system. Hyundai’s has also given the engine its Continuously Variable Valve Duration (CVVD) technology.
As you would imagine, power is sent through the front wheels and buyers can equip it with the ‘N Corner Carving Differential’ (a mechanical LSD with a fancy name) to control power transfer to the front wheels. A Launch Control system also comes standard.
Like the i30 N, a host of driving modes are available. These include Normal, Eco, Sport, N and N Custom. In the N Custom mode, drivers can select from Normal, Eco, Sport, and Sport+ settings for a host of different components. This includes a rev-matching function and variable muffler control.
To ensure the i20 N is a joy to drive through the corners, Hyundai has reinforced the chassis at 12 different points. The suspension also includes reinforced front domes and knuckles with distinct geometry. The camber has also been increased while a new sway bar, new springs, and new shock absorbers have been fitted. The brakes have also been enlarged.
All i20 N models come equipped with the Hyundai SmartSense Advanced Drivers Assistance System. This includes Forward Collision Warning, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Departure Warming, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Collision Warning, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Driver Attention Warning System including Leading Vehicle Departure Alert, High Beam Assist, Lane Following Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning, and a Rear view monitor with parking guidance. The hot hatch also includes a Performance Driving Data System that saves and displays driving data to improve a driver’s track skills.
Buyers will be able to purchase the i20 N in six available exterior colors; Performance Blue, Intense Blue, Polar White, Sleek Silver, Brass, and Phantom Black and all can be optioned with a Phantom Black roof. Other key exterior highlights include a host of red accents, an aggressive new front fascia, bespoke 18-inch wheels with a matte grey finish, and a rear spoiler.
The Hyundai i20 N will be available across Europe from spring 2021 and in Australia in the first half of 2021.
