The McLaren 720S in an absolute monster in a straight line. So much so, that not many vehicles managed to beat it; can the new Porsche 911 Turbo S add its name to that (short) list?
First off, we have to highlight the fact that, unlike the British supercar, the 911 Turbo S is four-wheel drive, so it’s got an advantage in terms of fast takeoffs, especially in the wet.
The Porsche uses a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter flat-six , which pumps out 650 PS (641 HP / 478 kW) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque and is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with an electronically controlled rear limited-slip differential.
Review: 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S – The Perfect Sports Car Is Now Even Better
Officially, the 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint is dealt with in a stunning 2.7 seconds, while the top speed is 330 km/h (205 mph).
With an output of 720 PS (710 HP / 530 kW), the Macca is more powerful, yet it has 30 Nm (22 lb-ft) less torque, at 770 Nm (568 lb-ft). Its twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 drives the rear wheels through a seven-speed gearbox, with the automaker claiming 2.9 seconds for the 0 to 100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration and a 341 km/h (212 mph) maximum speed.
On paper, the two are quite evenly matched, but there can be only one winner, and two quarter-mile drag races from a standing start should be enough to decide it. So, did the 911 Turbo S managed to keep up with the 720S?
