Mercedes Ready To Begin EV Production Across The Globe

Daimler’s EV production network is ready to begin manufacturing Mercedes-EQ models across the globe using existing plants. Come 2022, the carmaker’s portfolio will hold eight fully-electric Mercedes-EQ vehicles.

Sitting at the head of the table will be the EQS flagship sedan, which will go into production in Sindelfingen, Germany, early next year. Other production sites (for various models) include Hungary, China and the U.S.

Mercedes will also build its own battery systems, at locations in Germany, Poland, China and the United States.

These fully electric models will be built in the same factories as electrified, gasoline and diesel cars. According to the German brand, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles should account for more than half of its sales by the year 2030.

As for how production is being spread out, the EQS is getting assembled in Germany, as previously stated, but also in Vance (Alabama, USA) – alongside the EQE (also manufactured in Bremen and Beijing starting next year), in 2022. The EQC meanwhile, which is already in production, is being assembled in Bremen (Germany), as well as Beijing (China).

The smaller EQB compact SUV will go into production in Kecskemet, Hungary and Beijing in 2021. The EQA will join the EQB at the Beijing plant, although its production has already started in Rastatt, Germany.

“With its ‘Electric First’ strategy, Mercedes-Benz is consistently on the path to CO₂ neutrality and is investing heavily in transformation. Our vehicle portfolio becomes electric and thus also our global production network with vehicle and battery factories. We intend to lead in the field of e-mobility and focus in particular on battery technology. We are taking a comprehensive approach, ranging from research and development to production, and also including strategic cooperation,” said Daimler board member Markus Schafer.
