Volvo will unveil its second battery-electric model on March 2, while also sharing additional details of its electrification strategy.
The Swedish carmaker is planning on debuting a new fully-electric model each year until 2025, at which point half of its global sales will come from BEVs. As for this second EV, it will utilize the same compact modular architecture (CMA) as the XC40 Recharge.
When asked to speak about this upcoming model, Volvo boss Hakan Samuelsson told Autonews Europe that it will feature a “more streamlined body” compared to the XC40.

“We will keep you a bit in the dark until we show the car, but I promise you it will be a very good-looking car,” said Samuelsson, while adding that this new model will not be a successor to the discontinued V40 hatchback, which competed in a price segment that no longer appeals to the company.
“For Volvo to be profitable we need to focus on higher price, more premium car segments,” he stated.
It is possible that this upcoming model might look like the so-called Concept 40.2, which indeed is more streamlined than the XC40 thanks to a high-riding fastback design. However, the Concept 40.2 actually already spawned a production car in the Polestar 2, so could Volvo simply be prepping a re-badged Polestar 2? We’re hoping they’re not.
Still, Volvo’s global head of commercial ops, Lex Kerssemakers, said last year that a V40 successor is coming and that it will be high-riding so as to provide more room for the batteries.
