The Jeep Grand Wagoneer is kind of like good water pressure. It’s a nice thing that you don’t really think about until someone points it out. But that’s exactly why  Porsche trend-maker Magnus Walker thinks it’s perfect for the humble collector.

In his Hagerty series, The Next Big Thing, Walker takes a tour of one of Jeep’s most enduring SUVs.

The Grand Wagoneers was, in many ways, America’s first premium SUV. It was designed at a time when SUVs were still rugged and exclusively for off-roading. The idea of adding luxury and comfort turned it into the perfect vehicle for a lot of families.

It’s still every bit a classic, though. Despite having a big V8 that displaces 5.9 liters under the hood, it only made 144 hp when new. But with fine leather, power adjusting seats, and (who could forget?) that wood strip down the side, it’s a lot nicer than you’d expect.

Jeep previewed its 21st century Wagoneer with a near-production prototype last year

I own a truck from the ’80s that doesn’t have a clock, because apparently that was a luxury the first owner thought was too high-falutin’. The Grand Wagoneer, meanwhile, has a power rear window and amenities you’d expect more from a Mercedes than a Jeep.

But anyone who knows anything about Magnus Walker knows he isn’t really into leaving well enough alone. So he trades the 144 hp Grand Wagoneer for a Hemi-powered Wagoneer that was designed for the 2018 Easter Jeep Safari.

Needless to say, it’s worth a look. It’s enough to transform a city guy like Magnus Walker into a off-roading maniac by the end of the video.
