General Motors and Qualcomm, one of the leading suppliers of chips for the smartphone world, have expanded their partnership.

The San Diego company will become the automaker’s supplier of ‘cockpit’ chips, with the next generation of vehicles using Qualcomm’s third-gen Snapdragon Automotive Cockpit Platform.

The system will enhance the user experience by powering the upcoming digital instrument clusters and infotainment units. It will also provide the basis for the in-car AI-enabled virtual assistance, and will cover the next-gen telematics systems and upcoming advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as the lane change and adaptive cruise control, helping the auto firm take another step into the autonomous future.

“GM is a leading technology pioneer in the automotive industry. We are thrilled to be at the heart of GM’s automotive fleet as the industry embarks on the next generation of mobility with highly advanced digital cockpit, telematics and ADAS”, said Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Automotive Division, Nakul Duggal. “We look forward to continuing our work with GM to define the future of intelligent and connected vehicles.”

The collaboration between the two companies dates back a few years, with Qualcomm supplying GM with the advanced communication solutions for their car applications. These also include the safety and diagnostics in the automotive giant’s Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC vehicles, and an extended relationship that saw the tech firm help bring the C-V2X to life in the China-only Buick GL8 minivan.

“Qualcomm Technologies and General Motors have a strong track record of delivering innovative solutions to our customers,” GM’s VP for Global Electrification, Controls, Software and Electronics, Dan Nicholson, said. “Bolstering our relationship is key to leading the industry through a time of unprecedented growth in vehicle and infrastructure technology.”
