Maserati’s compact SUV is shaping up and ahead of its reveal (expected later this year), the brand has published a few teaser images.
The company took the special step of first giving the photos to its employees, to let them share them on social media. Unfortunately, Maserati isn’t quite ready to reveal the car fully, so the pictures are still pretty blurry.
The SUV will be smaller than the Levante and will compete with the likes of the Porsche Macan and the BMW X3.
The Grecale is named after a fierce north-east wind in the Mediterranean, says Maserati. That’s in keeping with the brand’s historical convention of naming the cars after winds, including the Ghibli, the Bora, and the Khamsin.

Based on the Giorgio platform, the Grecale will share its foundations with the Alfa Romeo Stelvio. As a result, the internal combustion version is likely to be powered by a version of the 2.0-liter inline-four engine found in the base Stelvio, though Maserati has not announced powertrains yet.
The automaker did previously communicate that a variant of the Grecale will be available as the brand’s first all-electric model, expected by 2022. It plans to offer electrified variants of every one of its models by 2025.
The Grecale will be built alongside the Alfa Romeo Stelvio in Cassino, Italy. The plant is about to receive an 800 million Euro investment to modernize it.
Maserati plans to fully unveil the Grecale before the end of 2021.
