Jaguar Land Rover made headlines last month when they unveiled their Reimagine plan, which called for Jaguar to axe the XJ replacement and transition into an electric-only brand.
It now appears the XJ wasn’t the only casualty. According to Automotive News Europe, JLR Chief Financial Officer Adrian Mardell confirmed development on vehicles based on the MLA-mid platform has stopped.
Besides the XJ, MLA-mid platform was slated to underpin an electric Land Rover. While nothing is official, it’s believed the model was the rumored Road Rover which would have been an electric vehicle that favored luxury and performance instead of hardcore off-roading.

The publication is also reporting the Jaguar J-Pace appears to have been axed as well. That model was billed as a Tesla Model X competitor and rumors suggested it would have a range of up to 300 miles (482 km).
However, that might have been an optimistic estimate as Mardell suggested the planned vehicles were underwhelming. In particular, he said the XJ wouldn’t have been “ahead of the tech curve” and “wouldn’t have that modern luxury, that future Jaguar vision, that drop-dead aspiration that we need to make this brand work.”
While the MLA-mid platform is dead, the MLA-flex lives on and will be used to underpin the next-generation Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. Land Rover also hasn’t given up on EVs as their first electric vehicle is now scheduled to arrive in 2024. By 2026, the brand will have six EVs that are expected to account for 60% of sales by 2030.
