When it came out, the Genesis G70 impressed pundits and led many to wonder if the Korean brand was ready to take on the best from the likes of BMW. Now that it has been updated, Genesis is trying to prove that its performance can keep up with its new looks.

Genesis USA President Mark Del Rosso recently got together with pro racer Justin Bell to try the car out at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. According to the two drivers, the updates to the Genesis are more than skin deep.

Indeed, improved performance was one of the new model’s chief attractions. Along with a Sport+ mode that keeps the selected gear for as long as possible, there’s a much more exciting dynamic AWD system that features a built-in drift mode.

Despite that, Bell says that the steering mid-corner is more stable. He also points out that the front-end is more responsive.

Del Rosso argues that the electronic suspension is to thank for that stability and responsiveness. It adapts to the way you drive, says the Genesis USA president, to let you exit corners at the highest speed possible.

With four-piston Brembo brakes in the front and two-pistons calipers in the back, stopping power is also good, reports Bell.

Customers can choose between two engine options. The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder produces 249 hp (185 kW / 252 PS) and 260 lb-ft (353 Nm) of torque, while the twin-turbo 3.3-liter V6 develops 365 hp (272 kW / 370 PS) and 376 lb-ft (510 Nm).

We’re still waiting on the big, over-the-top M3 fighter, but until then, the new G70 looks like a hoot.
