I know that some rich people are just going buck wild with their money but is anyone really willing to spend $20 million on a license plate from New York state that says “New York”? One person is betting someone will.

A private seller has posted their ’90s Volvo V70 to the DuPont Registry asking for the lofty price. With the sale will come the license plate, which can be transferred to almost any vehicle.

The license plate has been in the seller’s family since the ’70s, moving from car to car. Basically, the owner just got lucky, buying it from the state as soon as possible.

New York was the first US state to require license plates in 1901. It wasn’t until 1977, though, that it began offering vanity plates that could be fully customized. Before then, although you could order special plates, you could only have up to three letters and up to three numbers.

In 1977, the state began offering up to six letters and by 1978, narrower dies meant that up to eight letters could be ordered on the plate.

“In the late 1970s when I suggested to my father to order the plate, I knew that it was special… I just never realized how special,” the owner told the DuPont Registry.

As you might expect, this is the only street-legal “New York” New York plate in existence and this is the first time it’s ever been offered to anyone outside the family that bought it originally.

Kindly, the seller has offered to pay for the transfer fees.
