If you were to see the new Ford Bronco Sport parked on the street, you could be excused for thinking it is nothing more than a city runabout with a fancy, off-road-inspired name. Dig a little deeper, however, and the Bronco Sport reveals itself as a very good off-roader.
We’ve seen a lot of reviews of the Bronco Sport in recent months but this clip from The Smoking Tire is distinct as it focuses solely on the off-roading credentials of the baby Bronco with Matt Farah and co-host Zack tackling a particularly difficult trail in California.

For those that don’t know, the Bronco Sport is based on the same platform as the Escape and yet, the car manufacturer has managed to make it so much more capable across harsh terrain. When outfitted with all the available off-road parts, the Bronco Sport has 8.8 inches (224 mm) of ground clearance, as well as a 30.4-degree approach angle, a 33.1-degree departure angle, and a 20.4-degree breakover angle. It also has a crawl ratio of 18:1 and can ford up to 23.6 inches (599 mm) of water.
During this review, the YouTubers express their amazement at the fact that the Bronco Sport is equipped with All-Terrain tires and yet, encounters very few issues throughout the Double-Black diamond trail the SUV was tested on. The duo are also very complimentary of the approach, departure, and breakover angle as the SUV and only managed to bottom out and hit the skid plates on a couple of occasions.
