The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is issuing a recall of more than 95,000 Genesis sedans. The decision stems from a problem with certain ABS modules.

The vehicles that have felt the brunt of this action are 94,646 Hyundai Genesis and Genesis G80 models produced between 2015 and 2020. The NHTSA has also extended the recall to 552 Genesis G70 models built between 2019 and 2021.

The cars at risk are those provided with an ABS module produced by Mando. These can short, causing a significant overcurrent in the ABS modules, resulting in significant smoke or fire emanating from the engine bay.

The NHTSA first launched its investigation in December 2020 responding to allegations of fires in certain cars’ engine bays. Fortunately, there are no confirmed crashes, injuries, or fires in America as a result of this fault, but the administration is aware of three confirmed fires outside of the United States.

The cars are safe to drive, says Hyundai Motor Corporation (which owns Genesis), but it does advise parking them outdoors and away from structures and anything flammable.

A remedy is expected on April 18 and owners will be notified of the recall and invited into the dealership where a free repair will be administered. The solution, according to Hyundai, will be to simply replace the ABS module.
