Hyundai has released more details and additional images of one of the most surprising show cars of the year so far, the positively retro-modern Heritage Series Pony.

It’s not every day you get to see a car manufacturer actually going back to one of its old models and giving it a very thorough makeover but that’s exactly what Hyundai did to a first-generation Pony. Think of it as a factory restomod, and you wouldn’t be far from the truth.

The first-generation Pony was designed by none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro and it was the carmaker’s first mass-produced and exported model, placing it firmly among Hyundai’s most iconic models.

The show car is finished in matte silver paint and features a pair of fender-mounted cameras disguised to look like side mirrors. The highlight however is the lighting, with both the headlights and taillights replaced by state-of-the-art LED units with a ‘pixelated’ signature, much like these found on the Ioniq 5. The bigger, retro-inspired wheels look absolutely perfect on the square body too.

The most impressive bits are found inside though, where Hyundai designers added many modern elements to the cabin, as well as more premium materials, resulting in a tastefully done interior. The door cards are dressed in leather and aluminum, the seats are completely custom while the dashboard features a striking instrument panel made out of lighted vacuum tubes. Other notable features include a ‘digital touch transmission’ while in the trunk you’ll find a ‘last-mile mobility device’, which we guess is the company’s foldable electric scooter, inside a stainless steel case.

Hyundai didn’t mention any specifics on the EV powertrain but that’s no big deal as the Heritage Series Pony is simply a tribute to the brand’s roots.
